Missy Hart is winning: huge promotion at work, a promising relationship, but when she learns that one of those things isn't real, a lifetime of unaddressed trauma threatens to turn disappointment into tragedy.
BLACKHEART addresses the underexplored topic of mental health challenges among professional-class Black women. Society and culture expect that when a woman is beautiful, successful, and well-off financially, she is also well emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. Blackheart presses on that assumption by presenting Missy, a character who is wildly successful at work, very well liked and respected at her job, and fully involved in her community. What our pressure reveals is that Missy's pleasant demeanor and exuberance and profound confidence is a well-constructed facade sitting on top of a bruised and exhausted interiority that has been stressed to the breaking point. Our hope is that this film helps to spark a deeper curiosity about the well-being of our Black women who may be killing it in the professional world, but still need loving attention, grace, and to be held in every way.
